Star Nation

In Lakota tradition, each newborn receives a wanagi, a spirit from a star, accompanying them through life. After death, the wanagi leaves the body and is carried by four stars to the Big Dipper's cup, later traveling to the Milky Way and eventually returning to a star.

The Lakota phrase "mitakuye oyasin," meaning all my relatives, extends beyond humans, embracing all living beings, including stars. This idea aligns with their cosmology, acknowledging the interconnectedness of all species, not just within the Earth but throughout the universe.
